New York City, and it’s opening night of Peter Austin’s new play as he anxiously awaits to see if his Broadway show will be a hit. With his career on the line, he shares this anxious - but oh so very exciting - evening with his Hollywood star best friend, his fledgling producer, his erratic leading lady, his wunderkind director, an infamous drama critic, and a wide-eyed actor - turned coat-check attendant - on his first night in Manhattan hoping to find his big break.
Terrence McNally’s hit stage comedy is wild, raucous, ridiculous, tender — reminding us why “there’s no business like show business.

City Theatre Auditions for Terrence McNally’s hit stage comedy It’s Only a Play
August 29 and 30, 2023. Tuesday and Wednesday, 6:30 – 9:30 pm. 15-minute spots by appointment. Plan to stay beyond appointment time.
At Genesis Creative Collective.1507 Wilshire Blvd, Austin, TX. On the campus of Genesis Presbyterian Church.
No prepared monologue needed. Sides will be performed. We will try and send those a few days before your audition date. Please be familiar with the show and plan to stay a few minutes after your time as you may audition with others. Please bring headshot, resume, and your best understanding of your calendar as we need to anticipate conflicts.
This is an open call to all actors. We are casting certain roles, not all. Check the City Theatre website for character details.
Style: All actors will be expected to be able to play comedy as well as broad comedy.
Show dates October 20 – November 5, 2023, with rehearsals beginning week of September 4. Directed by guest director Jim Lindsay for City Theatre Austin.
