Heroes of the Fourth Turning
by Alchemy Theatre Company

Jun. 01 - Jun. 09 (2023)

It’s nearing midnight in Wyoming, where four young conservatives have gathered at a backyard after-party. They’ve returned home to toast their mentor Gina, newly inducted as president of a tiny Catholic college. But as their reunion spirals into spiritual chaos and clashing generational politics, it becomes less a celebration than a vicious fight to be understood. On a chilly night in the middle of America, this story speaks to the heart of a country at war with itself.

PERFORMANCE STYLE. This play is a borderline surrealist late-night debate and discussion between highly educated white conservative Americans out in the wilderness. The pacing of this show can be quick, but the human emotional moments are still just as potent. These characters (like most people) possess the good, the bad, and the ugly, and all of it is on full display during the course of this play. There are times we don’t agree with them, and there are times that we do and even feel for them. Like all shows at The Alchemy, we will bring these characters to life three-dimensionally with the Pulitzer nominated poetry of Will Arbery’s words.

CASTING:

A 39 year old man, Justin is a stoic former marine who works at the college. Any amount of guitar experience is a plus but not required.

A 28 year old man, Kevin is a lost and lonely alcoholic who is curious about the outside world.

A 29 year old woman, Teresa lives in New York and writes for a right-wing publication. She’s fiery and follows the political ideas of Steve Bannon.

A 25 year old woman, Emily is Gina’s daughter and chronically ill. She is less rigid in her conservatism than the others and empathizes with those Teresa would disparage.

A 64 year old woman, Gina is Emily’s mother and the newly inducted president of the Catholic college. She has an older right-wing view that contrasts heavily with Teresa’s.
