Based on Puccini’s beloved opera La BohèmeRENT follows the ups and downs of a year in the life of a group of impoverished, artistic friends living in Manhattan’s East Village.

Directed by MJ Salinas and Assistant Directed by Amanda Ruiz. Choreographed by Katie Loftin.


Aurora Arts Theatre is pleased to announce its third production of 2023, RENT presented by Scott Electric Company. Jonathan Larson's iconic Pulitzer Prize-winning musical RENT shaped a generation of audiences and taught us all to measure our life in love. 

Please arrive at least 15 minutes early to fill out an audition form. Auditions will be split into two parts - dance and singing selected by the production team.

Our Vocal Director will teach you 16 bars from the song selection listed below. Please familiarize yourself with the following songs from RENT:

Dance Selection:
Please wear clothes you can move in and bring proper footwear to dance in, as there will be a dance/movement auditions led by our choreographer.

Reading Selection:
There will be no sides to read, our production team will be reviewing your ability to perform during the singing and dancing portions of your audition.

Callbacks:
There will be no callbacks. Our production team may request an auditioner to stay after. This is not a reflection of who will or will not be cast in the production.  

Our production team is planning to cast 16 people for this production. PLEASE BE AWARE THAT WHILE YOU MAY AUDITION FOR ONE ROLE, YOU MAY BE CONSIDERED FOR MULTIPLE ROLES OR CAST IN ANOTHER. IF YOU ARE NOT INTERESTED IN THIS, PLEASE NOTE THAT ON YOUR APPLICATION DURING AUDITIONS. ENSEMBLE ACTORS WILL BE CAST IN MULTIPLE ROLES. PLEASE NOTE ANY CONFLICTS YOU MAY HAVE ON YOUR AUDITION APPLICATION.

RENT features mature adult themes including sex, drug use, profanity and same-sex intimacy. All performers must be 18 years old by the first day of rehearsal.

ROLES

Roger Davis
A struggling musician and former drug addict. He is reminiscent of Kurt Cobain. Roommates with Mark in the loft and battles with being HIV-positive.

Mark Cohen
Filmmaker and video artist. Knee deep in his own soul-searching, Mark is the typical young artist. He and Roger are roommates in the loft. A bit of a nerd.

Tom Collins
A computer genius and liberal professor. He is a nurturer with a smooth and relaxed disposition. Used to be a roommate in the loft and is HIV-positive.

Benjamin Coffin III
The landlord of Mark and Roger's apartment building. A former roommate in the loft, Benny traded in his personal morals for power and wealth.

Joanne Jefferson
A public interest lawyer and headstrong lesbian. She is smart and purposeful in all her decisions. Carries on a tumultuous relationship with Maureen.

Angel Dumott Schunard
The eccentric HIV-positive street drummer. A drag queen with an incredible gift of dance and a magnetic personality. He becomes Tom's lover.

Mimi Marquez
An HIV-positive stripper with drug addictions. Slender and sickly, she conceals it all at her job in the local strip club. She lives in the same building as the loft.

Maureen Johnson
An unpredictably zany performance artist. Maureen oozes sexuality and used to live in the loft. She has recently dumped Mark for Joanne.
