This is the story of two aging men, Max and John, neighbors who have been feuding for most of their lives. Invigorated by their shared affection for their new neighbor across the street, the beautiful, eccentric, and charming Ariel, they face-off as romantic rivals until their hilarious shenanigans finally bring about a resolution to their long-standing differences. Based on the 1993 film, which starred Jack Lemmon, Walter Matthau, and Ann-Margret, this stage adaptation captures the lovably crotchety characters through twinkling humor, great songs, and the affectionate depiction of a small town that feels like home to everyone.

Ariel (A beautiful, free-spirited, playful newcomer to town. She’s a college literature professor with a poetic flair, and a sensual air of mystery. Actor must have excellent comedic skills and sing and dance well. Ann-Margret played this role in the film; principal.) – Female, Age 50s
Snyder (A nefarious tax collector. Unrelenting and by the books. Must sing and dance well; principal.) – Female Age 40s – 50s
Fran ( Married to Stan. The domineering, self-righteous town gossip. Must be a strong singer and dance well.) – Female, typically 50s, but will consider any age
Stan ( A timid, brow-beaten polka champion. Must be a strong singer and dance well. Married to Fran) Male, typically 50s, but will consider any age
Jacob ( Max’s son. A mild-mannered Minnesota lawyer. Lonely in love and looking for a life change. Must be a strong actor and singer; principal.) – Male, Age 20s-40s
Melanie ( John’s daughter. A real estate agent whose marriage is falling apart. She’s longing for a life change – and a warmer climate. Must be a strong actor and singer; principal.) – Female, Age 20s-40s
Tim (The dubious minister who is married to Unis. Must be a strong singer and dance well.) Age 40s – 60s
