Frank's Life

Frank is the star of his own soap opera, Frank's Life. Unfortunately for poor Frank, he doesn't know it. Nor does he realize that his wife, mother, sister and best friend—indeed everyone he has met since the age of 3—are actors. But the elaborate deception can't last much longer: ratings have dropped, revenues are down—even the network itself is in trouble.

As cast members are asked to take pay cuts, they begin to leave the show—killing themselves off in unseemly soap-opera ways. Frank's gnawing feeling that something about his life just "doesn't seem right" grows to near paranoia before he makes the painful discovery that he's been duped by everyone he cares for. Then there's the little matter of "what to do with Frank."

A darkly funny allegory about an everyman honest, good and true—who learns that he has lost title of his very life—and his final showdown with corporate powers to win back that life and stake out his own spot in a world without artifice. And in the end, as Frank reclaims his humanity, the actors who surround him discover theirs as well.

Since 2018, Communication By Captivation has switched its medium, focusing heavily on the world of musical cartoons (See the Sirius AI: A Post-Apocalyptic Musical Website), and we are now ready to return to our roots and get back into producing live performances, which is how the organization began in 2015.

This performance will be happening at: The Trinity Street Playhouse 901 Trinity St, Austin
Austin, TX 78701, on the last weekend of April 2023.

Characters we are looking to Cast:

Frank (30 M) - The star of his own soap opera, but doesn't know it! Frank is the straight man in a world where everyone else is either crazy, or otherwise having ulterior motives. He thinks the life he lives is normal and fine, but little does he know that everyone he has ever known are paid actors.

Shelly (Early 30's F) - Frank's perfect Wife in everyway. But behind the scenes is making moves to England to star in the next hit TV show.

Corley (31 M) - Frank's Best friend and former College Roommate. He has genuinely made a strong connection with Frank over the years, but even actors need to eat.

Stace (Late 20's F) - Corley's Wife who is actually in love with Frank, and she ain't acting. Heck maybe it will even boost the ratings to have an on screen affair.

Gladys (50's F) - Frank's Mother, and a woman who has spent far too long in a profession which has been not too kind to her. Maybe it's time to consider retirement...?

Joy (Mid 20's F) - Frank's younger Sister and a method actress who may have lost touch with what is real and what is part of the performance. She wants to save Frank from the world he does not know he is in.

Pruett (30's M) - A television producer with astronomical pressure on him to boost those ratings or else the plug may be pulled! For now though? Maybe we need to ask the actors to take some pay cuts...

Rehearsals:

Rehearsals will typically take place Monday, Tuesday & Wednesdayevenings Starting March 27th with the exception of a Friday night read through on March 24th (we will probably meet at a bar for that one). We are flexible in case of conflicts, but too many could bar you from being cast. Not everyone will be called to every rehearsal, but as we get further along in the process you can expect a higher number of everyone being called to rehearsals.
