American Mariachi

It’s the 1970s, and Lucha spends her days caring for her ailing mother but longs to shake up her life. When a forgotten record sparks her mother’s memory, Lucha and her cousin strike upon a radical idea: to create an all-female mariachi band. Infused with live music played by a live mariachi band, this “big-hearted, musical tug at the heartstrings” reminds us how music and love can make just about anything possible.
American Mariachi is the first play or musical written by a Latine writer, and first show by the theater’s main producing company depicting Mexican-American culture since the founding of our theater in the early 1900s, as far as our internal historical records show. This show requires the kind of talent and performers that have either historically not been given an opportunity to be featured on our stage, or talent who have been in The Public Theater community who have not been able to showcase this style of music and performance. Given the niche needs of this show, we are releasing an audition call for this production prior to the general season call. Prepared Materials Required
- Unlisted YouTube video links containing: 1 minute monologue and 1 minute mariachi-style vocal selection.
*Video should show performer from at least the waist up and be well lit with the angle of the camera directly at eye level. Please do not sing to the camera, but just to the right or left. Please keep in mind that this is a stage audition, and not a film audition. - Those who play a relevant instrument should consider uploading an additional link to demonstrate your proficiency in the instrument(s). Beginner to advanced – ALL LEVELS ENCOURAGED!
- If you do not have access to personal accompaniment, a one minute selection of any of the following may be used
- No callbacks are scheduled at this time. Should callbacks be deemed necessary, individual invitations will be sent directly to the email address on file.
