The Turn of the Screw (opera)

The Turn of the Screw is a disturbing work, a novelty in the opera world for being something of a horror story with genuine chills. Based on Henry James's novel of the same name, it's an old fashioned ghost story that touches on issues of a very contemporary nature.

Musically it is one of Britten's most interesting. The narrative is divided into a prologue and 16 scenes that are fairly episodic in nature. However they are connected together by variations of the "Screw" theme, built around the twelve note row. The sequence ascends in the first Act and descends in the second.

Texas State University Opera Theatre is searching for a boy soprano (approx. 10-12 year old) for the role of "Miles" in their Fall production of Benjamin Britten's opera "The Turn of the Screw."  The role has a very large vocal range from a middle-C to a sustained high A, above the treble-clef staff.  Some theatrical experience would be preferred.  The role of Miles is the centerpiece of the opera's plot, it truly is a "lead" role. The boy even gets to die in the end. 'Tis opera! 
 
The role will be double-cast, one position is already filled. The university students are also double-cast.  Please consult the rehearsal/tech schedule below to assure that the commitment and time-frame will work for you. There is no financial compensation but sheet music, costume, etc. will be provided.
