Pericles
by Shakespeare at Winedale
Aug. 14, 2015
Friday
Facing pirates, bawds, assassins, shipwrecks, and goddesses, Pericles must sail across the entire Mediterranean in search of love and family. Adventure after adventure follows, no matter where his ship lands. But miracles are possible in this fairy tale full of twisting destinies and divine intervention.
“Pericles is one of Shakespeare’s little-known gems, a fairy-tale romance set against the backdrop of the Eastern Mediterranean in classical times,” says Director and Regents Professor of English Dr. James Loehlin. “It features exotic locations, memorable characters, and one of Shakespeare’s most breathtakingly beautiful scenes.”
Shakespeare at Winedale is a University of Texas program in which students study and perform Shakespeare at the Winedale Historical Complex near Round Top. Since its founding by English professor James Ayres in 1970, the program’s unique, hands-on approach has brought Shakespeare’s words to life for hundreds of students and thousands of audience members. University students from many disciplines and backgrounds work together for six weeks at Winedale, ending their summer with four weekends of performances in a converted nineteenth-century hay barn.
