La Carpa Garcia
by Say Si
Sep. 26 - Sep. 28, 2014
Before the rise of Hollywood and television - when the magic of live performance and Vaudeville reigned - the traveling circus thrived as a unique art form that blended original storytelling with eccentric entertainment. Even in old San Antonio at the beginning of the 20th century, one family traveling circus and tent show captivated audiences in Westside neighborhoods and beyond -La Carpa Hermanos Garcia. This Hispanic Heritage Month, SAY Sí's ALAS Youth Theatre Company will bring the circus to town" by sharing the triumphs and struggles of the family behind this local Latino circus show in "La Carpa Garcia."
Created in collaboration with visual artist, Adriana Garcia, and Francisco Garcia - granddaughter and son of La Carpa comico, Rodolfo G. 'Don Fito' Garcia - ALAS students have used archived articles, interviews, and photos to introduce families and young people to this rich, beautiful and often untold chapter in San Antonio's cultural history. One of the most prominent pieces of archival material that students referenced was a series of audio recordings of "Don Fito" telling his own family story.
