In a stark motel room at the edge of hell, May (played by Keridwyn Herschberger), a disheveled woman, sits dejectedly on a rumpled bed while Eddie (played by Sam Blasco), a cowboy who has seen too many rodeos, crouches in a corner fiddling with his riding gear. When he attempts to console her she seems, at first, to soften—but then she suddenly attacks him, angry and distressed by Eddie's frequent absences and affairs.
As the accusations issue forth and the emotional violence reaches its crescendo, the desperate nature of their relationship becomes painfully apparent—they cannot exist with, or without, one another, yet neither can subdue their burning passion.
The poignancy of their situation (why they can never truly be together) is unearthed with the help of the play's two other characters: a clueless man who stops by to take May on a date (played by Bruce Calvery), only to become the butt of Eddie's funniest yet most humiliating jokes; and a ghostly old man (played by Tom Bettes) who sits in a rocking chair at the side of the universe, sipping tequila and commenting wryly on what he observes. Eventually, May’s and Eddie’s battle to embrace their desires and each other exhausts them-but it is evident that their love and the curse of the past which haunts them, will remain forever damned and hopeless.
