A Midsummer Night's Dream
Lord, what fools these mortals be! - III.ii

Perhaps Shakespeare’s most popular comedy, A Midsummer Night’s Dream never fails to delight. Hermia loves Lysander and Helena loves Demetrius – but Demetrius is supposed to marry Hermia. When the Duke of Athens tries to enforce the marriage, the lovers take refuge in the woods, only to wander into a fight between the king and queen of the fairies. Magic and mischief in the moonlight make for one of Shakespeare’s most popular comedies about love and a donkey.

In addition to the performances, there will be two unique pre-residency events. The first will be a lecture by Dr. J.K Barret called "Would he would change": Powers of Substitution in A Midsummer Night's Dream. The lecture will take place at 3 pm on Friday, October 2, in the Tom Lea Room at the Harry Ransom Center as part of the British Studies lecture series. It is free and open to the public.

Back for its thirteenth year, our annual Shakespeare and the Law event dives into the intersection of Shakespeare’s plays and their legal issues. On Thursday, October 8th, there will be a free catered reception followed by a panel of celebrated Shakespearean and legal scholars, aptly named "According to Our Law" - Law and Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night’s. The Spirit Of Shakespeare Players will also perform scenes from Midsummer as part of the evening’s festivities. This special event is free to the public and will take place at 6:30pm, in the Eidman Courtroom, located inside UT Law School, on UT campus.

Housed at the University of Notre Dame, Actors From The London Stage is an educational program, which brings 5 classically trained actors from major English theaters to college campuses around the United States. As part of their residency with UT, they will teach approximately 30 classes and workshops and perform A Midsummer Night’s Dream four times using only 5 actors and minimal props and costumes. The AFTLS performance style emphasizes language, characterization, and the dramatic force of Shakespeare’s works through compelling and minimalist staging. The AFTLS residency at the University of Texas is sponsored by the Department of English and supported by the Department of Theatre and Dance, the President’s Office, the Graduate School’s Academic Enrichment Fund, the Center for European Studies, and the College of Liberal Arts.
