What does Christmas look like if we look at it from another point of view? Say, the experience of a Christmas tree? Or from a young person whose family recently arrived in Austin from Central America? This December, the Zilker Botanical Garden and Teatro de la Tierra are proud to present Beto, Beto el Abeto, a play that blends languages, cultures, genres, and biological kingdoms in an inventive, unorthodox approach to Christmas amidst a world that is changing rapidly.
The play is very a playful adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen’s The Fir Tree, tinted with memories of Nochebuena – Christmas Eve in Spanish-speaking, Latin American countries– and just the right amount of science. It runs for around 70 minutes with no intermission, and it is performed in English and in Spanish, alternating languages between performances. Beto is well suited for audiences 11 and up (or younger audiences who are okay sitting down for that uninterrupted amount of time.)
Teatro de la Tierra is a newly-founded company, making teatro “de la tierra”, in all of its translations from Spanish: of the planet, of the dirt, and of the soil, of the land, of the homeland. The project is supported by funding from the City of Austin Economic Development Department through the Elevate Grant, and it is fiscally sponsored by the Austin Creative Alliance.
¿Cómo es la Navidad si la miramos desde otro punto de vista? Digamos, ¿la experiencia de un árbol de Navidad? ¿O de un joven cuya familia llegó recientemente a Austin desde Centroamérica? Este diciembre, el Jardín Botánico Zilker y el Teatro de la Tierra se enorgullecen de presentar Beto, Beto el Abeto, una obra que combina idiomas, culturas, géneros y reinos biológicos en un enfoque inventivo y poco ortodoxo de la Navidad en medio de un mundo que está cambiando rápidamente.
La obra es una adaptación muy lúdica de El abeto de Hans Christian Andersen, teñida de recuerdos de Nochebuena (Nochebuena en los países latinoamericanos de habla hispana) y la cantidad justa de ciencia. Tiene una duración aproximada de 70 minutos sin intermedio y se representa en inglés y español, alternando idiomas entre representaciones. Beto es ideal para audiencias de 11 años en adelante (o audiencias más jóvenes que están bien sentadas durante ese tiempo ininterrumpido).
Teatro de la Tierra es una compañía de reciente creación que hace teatro “de la tierra”, en todos sus sentidos: del planeta, de la tierra, y del suelo, de la tierra, de la patria. El proyecto cuenta con fondos del Departamento de Desarrollo Económico de la Ciudad de Austin a través de Elevate Grant y está patrocinado fiscalmente por la Austin Creative Alliance.
