MONDAY, or The Other Rape Play

Monday
On Monday, November 6, 2023, at 7:30 PM, four actors will climb onstage to share a new play that may be the first of its kind: Monday, or the Other Rape Play, by Amy Abrigo.
Five months ago, Amy was awarded an Individual Artist Grant by the San Antonio Arts Commission to write, workshop, and produce a public reading of a new play. This is the play she created.
We follow the character Wiley, also known as “Wy.” The play starts in present-day San Antonio, years after her assault. As she recounts what happened, Wiley leaps through time, and we watch as she relives the days, weeks, months, and years before and after the event. We join Wy as she tries to understand how this could have happened to her.
The play is called Monday, or The Other Rape Play. The title comes from the day the rape takes place and is subtitled “the other rape play” to draw attention to the fact that there is already a play called That Pretty Pretty; Or, The Rape Play by Sheila Callaghan and begs the question:
Why are there so many plays about rape?
Why is rape still a systematic issue in a country where we are supposed to be born free?
How do we prevent this from happening?
What do we do when it happens to us?
