Tuesday
This Valentine’s Day, CTX Theatre will live-premiere two vintage radio shows on youtube, during which audiences can interact with the cast online.
"The Bickersons" (CBS) and "Fibber McGee and Molly" (NBC) were hit situation comedies during America's Golden Age of Radio (1940s-50s). Both beloved by audiences and featured recurring characters and themes. Blanche and John Bickerson were in constant, hilarious marital strife, while Fibber McGee was known for his tall tales, to the exasperation of his wife, Molly. CTX’s radio special presents one episode from each show.
The episodes are directed and audio-engineered by Smokey Westerfeld, whose distinguished career at CBS earned him six Emmy Awards in Television Audio. Westerfeld says, “I wanted to do something fun with our kids. Historically, these two shows represented a time in America when life was much more difficult than it is now. Radio brought our people together during the Great Depression, and through WWII. Those dark days were made bearable with laughter, from programs like FMM and the Bickersons. Whether our audience appreciates the sentimentality of The Golden Days of Radio, or just finds humor in the lives of our loving couples, we will all laugh together for a while.”
The vintage radio show special includes performances by: Wren Bartel (Clara), Kristen Burkhart (Operator/Mrs. Marshall) Keierra Collins (Mrs. Upington/Clerk), Nathaniel Fomby (Bickersons’Announcer/Old Timer)/Mayor), Preston Galban (John/himself), Christian Garza (Dr. Rasper), Thomas Hughes (Jay Jackson/McGee), Anna McCauley (Johnny/Delivery Boy), Emily Sandler (Blanche), Kendra Theimer (Molly), Nick Vallee (Frank/Tired Man), and Smokey Westerfeld (Mr. Wimple).
