The VORTEX presents a new production of Rap Unzel by Jeremy Rashad Brown. This new “back-to-school” production about Black Boy Joy and Rap’s amazing hair extends outreach for children and their families. 

Rap Unzel presents a journey of Black Boy Joy, self-care, and hair. Reginald “RAP” Unzel is a young man with big hair and bigger dreams of musical stardom. . . IF only he can get out of his room. This celebration of identity, awareness, and empowerment features hip hop music and dance. Appropriate for ages 6 and up.

 

 

https://rap-unzel.co/Rap Unzel by Jeremy Rashad Brown received 2 productions in 2019, debuting at Scottish Rite Theatre with another production in New Orleans by the Radical Buffoons. One of the most significant cultural and social contributions of current American theatre is to center voices and images of people of color.

Rap Unzel disrupts traditional fairy tales, railing against mainstream philosophies that center hyper-masculine and stoic representations of Black men and also providing positive roles and representation for BIPOC artists. The story’s uplifting and whimsical themes have the tremendous potential to touch audiences of all ages, connecting Ancestors and Descendants through the Arts.

Jeremy Rashad Brown creates a contemporary view for Black Boys and young men with fresh characters for new audiences. This significant representation for young people provides new pathways for social change and reframing identity. The VORTEX proudly presents this new production. Directed by Indiia Wilmott.

Performances will be at 1 pm and 3 pm on Saturdays and Sundays only beginning October 9, 2021.

To keep audiences and performers safe and comfortable, we have moved the show outside and folks will be seated at tables of 2, 4, or 6 with their families and loved ones.

Appropriate for ages 6 and up. Live-streaming Saturday 23rd 1pm (ASL-interpreted) and Sunday 24th at 3 pm
