Mammoth, a De-extinction Love Story
by PPP Graduate Student Alliance, University of Texas

Feb. 23 - Feb. 26, 2018
Friday-Monday

ONCE WE’VE DESTROYED what we love, what seduces us to try and revive it back? Should love have anything to do with science? And what the hell is a that dragonfly doing in a glacier? Enveloped in a silent glacier, the smell of science, and a dying tundra, join a team of hunters and scientists as they try to revive a long-extinct animal right before your eyes. Leave (some) of your causality behind and come wonder and play in our paleo-fable of a world.

MAMMOTH by Adam Burnett premiered at The Brick theatre in NYC in the Spring of 2015, following two productions at Highways Performance Space in LA and Tricklock Performances Space in Albuquerque.

ABOUT THE PLAYWRIGHT

ADAM R. BURNETT is a playwright and theatre-maker. Adam’s surreal theatre work is grounded in the presence of the performer/spectator and the fleeting nature of shared space. His theatre is a space for transparency, transcendence, transgression and community.

Adam’s plays have been performed throughout the United States and in Lithuania – in festivals and main stage presentations. In New York his work has been presented at Ars Nova, ART/NY’s Gural Theatre, The Brick, The Bushwick Starr, Dixon Place, The Duplex, Incubator Arts Project/Ontological-Hysteric Theater, The New Ohio, Performance Project @ University Settlement, and Vital Joint. Nationally his work has been presented at The Unicorn in Kansas City, the Marigny Opera House in New Orleans, Highways Performance Space in Los Angeles, Las Vegas Little Theater in Las Vegas, and Tricklock Company in Albuquerque, among others.

ABOUT THE DIRECTOR

A native of Guatemala City, Khristián Méndez Aguirre has spent the past 9 years hopping over ponds and setting up shop in places as diverse as Rome, Italy; Lisbon, Portugal; Bar Harbor, USA; and Mulshi Valley, India before making his way to the UT Austin campus. He earned a BA in Human Ecology from College of the Atlantic. There, he produced and co-directed his translation of Alejandro Casona’s Prohibido Suicidarse en Primavera and a staged reading of his play The Floor is Yours. Méndez Aguirre has spent time hiking multiple National Parks around the US, at United Nations conferences as a lobbyist all over the globe, and doing physical theatre training with Double Edge Theatre in Ashfield, MA.

Mammoth is his second production at UT, following the wildly successful run of Ariana Reines’ Telephone in October of 2017. Méndez Aguirre is a second-year MFA candidate in Performance as Public Practice at UT Austin’s department of Theatre and Dance. khristianméndez.com
