Video: TALKING PICTURES by Horton Foote, Gaslight Baker Theatre, Lockhart, August 21 - September 5, 2015
A slice of Southern life, Talking Pictures by Horton Foote paints a lyrical picture of 1929, Harrison Texas that Central Texas natives will find entirely familiar in ways both comforting and disquieting.
Myra Tolliver, a single mother, barely makes enough to survive, caring for herself and her teenage son, and now the arrival of "talking pictures" threatens her livelihood as a pianist for silent films. She knows her means of making a living is at an end, and that her prospects are dim, but she is willing to do almost anything to keep herself and Pete going.
Playwright Horton Foote is quoted as having said, "Early on, I said to myself that I would like to write a kind of moral and spiritual history of a place. It sounds a little pretentious, I know. But that's really what I set for myself."
In Talking Pictures, he attains that goal with quiet force that illuminates life in layers.
