Community Mapping Internship with the Cultural Arts Division Available
The City of Austin Cultural Arts Division is seeking a full-time intern to help with their upcoming Cultural Asset Mapping Project. The ideal candidate would be skilled in GIS and data collection, proficient in Adobe Creative Suite and document design, and comfortable soliciting public input and feedback through participatory mapping exercises. We are looking for a candidate that is interested in learning more about planning for the City of Austin’s cultural resources and creative industries and is willing to take an active role in helping implement the Cultural Asset Mapping Project.
Eligibility
Graduate students, or recent graduates in urban planning, public policy, or a related major are preferred. Interest in collaborative community mapping programs and experience in social research methods and GIS is essential.
Schedule/Time Commitment
This is a paid, full-time position ideally beginning in early May through June, 2016. Work schedule is flexible, but ideally would be for 30-40 hours per week. Pay is $13/hour. Position is open 9 a.m. - 6 p.m., Monday - Friday, at the Cultural Arts Division offices (201 E. 2nd Street). Some possible weekend and evening hours as needed.
Skills Required
The intern must possess a
- proficiency in GIS and knowledge of participatory mapping strategies
- experience in data collection, surveys, and social research methods
- knowledge of Indesign, Illustrator, and publication design preferred, but not required
- excellent written and verbal communications skills
- strong attention to detail
- ability to manage multiple projects and shifting priorities
- proven success in working independently
- high level of workplace professionalism
- ability to coordinate with multiple teams and departments
- experience explaining technical material to a lay audience and speaking to audiences across diverse disciplines
While performing the duties of this job, intern will be required to sit, use a computer, walk, stoop, kneel, lift and move up to 30 pounds.

Graphic Design Internship with the Cultural Arts Division Available
The City of Austin Cultural Arts Division is seeking a part-time graphic design/illustration intern that can help take the lead on creating a graphic identity and promotional material for our upcoming Cultural Asset Mapping Project (CAMP). We are looking for a creative designer and/or illustrator interested in design that fosters public participation, civic engagement, and community outreach. CAMP is a project that relies heavily on the input of Austin’s artists, creatives, and cultural communities and we are looking for a designer/illustrator that can help us engage participants with compelling, informative, and eye-catching design.
The ideal candidate will be skilled in graphic design, illustration, document design and layout and knows how to cater their message to a wide range of audiences and through various mediums. CAMP will also be using the input of Austinites at large to create a series of maps using GIS and graphic designers looking for experience in learning more about incorporating mapping in their practice are encouraged to apply. CAMP may expand to include some web-based components and web design skills are encouraged, but not required. We are looking for a creative self-starter who not only has the graphic design and illustration background to help develop the project’s graphic identity, but also understands how to engage communities and solicit public input through thoughtful and compelling design.

Schedule/Time Commitment
Position is open 8 a.m. - 6 p.m., Monday - Friday, at the Cultural Arts Division offices (201 E. 2nd Street). Work schedule is flexible, but must be for at least 10 hours per week. This position is project-based and will likely last 4-6 weeks, depending on hours worked per week. The position is open until filled and can begin as soon as early April 2016. Pay will be $12/hour.
