Who: Austin-based playwrights 

What: Year-long development cohort for early- to mid-draft plays 

When: February–December 2026 (meets 1–2 Sundays/month); Public readings in January 2027 

Stipend: $650 

Eligibility: Plays must align with GFT’s mission and be written for six or fewer actors 

Deadline: August 2, 2025. 

Ground Floor Theatre is accepting applications for the 2026 GFT Writes cohort. For this cycle, we are considering drafted plays that focus on historically underrepresented communities. 

GFT Writes will meet one to two Sundays a month from February-December 2026, with workshops and public readings in January 2027. 

Playwrights will receive a $650 stipend for their participation in GFT Writes. 

GFT Writes will meet in person. Playwrights must be based in the Austin area and plays must fall within our mission to be eligible. Please also note that Ground Floor Theatre is a small company; our selection process will prioritize plays written for six or fewer actors.  

Early to mid-draft plays are welcome for development in GFT Writes! 

To apply, email: 

1. The current draft of the play you’d like to develop in the cohort.  

2. A one to two page statement addressing the following: what questions you will explore as you revise your play?; how your play fits into your body of work?; why you want to develop the play with GFT Writes?, in community with other playwrights?.  

3. Your theatre resume which includes your address. If your play has had any workshop or production history, please include that here. 

All applications will be anonymous to our selection committee until we’ve determined our finalists. Do not include your name or contact information in either your play or statement.
