(via The Company Theatre, San Antonio)
From The Company Theatre, San Antonio, April 5, 2024:
It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of Damian Gillen, the heart and soul of The Company Theatre. Damian's unparalleled dedication to the art of theatre enriched our lives with joy, authenticity, and love. For over 30 years, Damian toured around the country, bringing his unique vision and boundless energy to every performance. From the small-town tales of Tuna, Texas, to embodying Mark Twain, teaching Texas history in one darn easy lesson, navigating the complete works of William Shakespeare, and touching our hearts as Tiny Tim.
Damian's versatility and passion were unmatched. Damian's legacy extends beyond the stage. Known for his kindness, good humor, and boundless love, he was a devoted individual who found joy in every aspect of life, from his passion for sci-fi and superhero films to his quest for the perfect slice of pizza. His work in theatre, marked by laughter and the pursuit of communal happiness, mirrored his offstage persona—a man of faith, generosity, and a convivial spirit.
His contributions to the theatre, particularly his penchant for comedy and his unique ability to connect with the audience through live performance, have left an indelible mark on us all. Damian believed in the transformative power of theatre to bring light into our lives, a mission he pursued with every ounce of his being.
As we mourn the loss of Damian, we also celebrate the immense joy and laughter he brought into our lives. Plans for a tribute show in his honor are underway, and we will share more information as arrangements are made. In the meantime, let's honor Damian's memory by enjoying a slice of pizza, his favorite treat, in his honor.
In the words of Mark Twain, "The two most important days in your life are the day you are born and the day you find out why." Damian certainly found his why in the laughter, stories, and moments shared on and off the stage. His life was a beautiful illustration of Twain's wisdom, lived with purpose and shared generously with us all.
