Opportunity: Vocal Performance Career Grants from Houston Gilbert & Sullivan Society, Application Deadline December 16, 2022

(www.hgns.org)The Gilbert & Sullivan Society of Houston is taking applications from vocal performers for a set of career grants open to anyone 35 years or younger as of January 28, 2023.  Finalists will be invited to perform in Houston for the awarding of the grants.

The Competition will award 1st Prize of $2,500, 2nd Prize of $1,500, 3rd Prize of $750, as well as a voted Audience Favorite Prize of $500. All eligible performers are invited to submit one song (either opera, musical theater, or operetta - NO ART SONG) by December 16 using the form linked below.  The application fee is $40.

Finalists, announced January 7, 2023, will receive a stipend of $100 and must prepare three pieces in total, one of which must be from a Gilbert & Sullivan opera. Finals are to be held in Houston on January 28, 2023.  The G&S piece will be presented first, then the judges will call for a second piece.

Competition judges will be Sasha Cooke (Grammy-winning mezzo-soprano, Metropolitan Opera), Richard Bado (Director of Artistic Operations and Chorus Master, Houston Grand Opera), and Monique Midgette (Associate Artistic Director, Theater Under the Stars).

Requirements

  • A live video of one aria is to be submitted from musical theater, opera, or operetta; no art song permitted.
  • Application and an entry fee of $40 must be submitted by Friday, December 16, 2022, 11:59 PM CST.
  • The applicant must be 35 years of age or younger and available to perform in person in Houston on January 28, 2023.
  • The applicant cannot have placed 3rd or better in either of the two most recent Career Grant Finals.
  • Upon selection, finalists will need to provide a headshot and bio suitable for promotional materials, as well as pertinent social media information. 
  • Each finalist will be required to have three pieces prepared. At least one Gilbert & Sullivan number is required. The other two pieces can be any aria or musical theater number. No art songs. 

Notes

  • The Society will notify all applicants of the results by January 7th, 2023.
  • 10 finalists will be selected to perform at the Career Grant Competition Finals along with 3 Alternates.
  • At the Finals concert, each contestant will perform their Gilbert & Sullivan piece and one of their other numbers as selected by the judges.
  • Finalists will receive a stipend of $100 but are responsible for their own transportation and lodging.
