San Antonio Symphony Musicians Inquire of Symphony Board Chair: Who's in Charge?
A press release from the Musicians of the San Antonio Symphony included the text of an astonishing letter sent Dec. 18 to the Symphony Society of San Antonio board chair, Alice Viroslav.
Dear Dr. Viroslav,
The Union has several questions for you as we move forward. The Union has a right to information necessary to understand whether management’s representative(s) with whom the Union and the employees may be dealing are authorized to speak for the employer. The employer also has a duty to bargain with the Union over the wages, hours, and conditions of employment.
1. What is the status of Mr. Tom Stephenson as relates to negotiations? What is his status as relates to managing the operations of the San Antonio Symphony?
2. What is his relation to SSSA? Is he under the employ of SSSA? If so, what is the nature of his position within the SSSA organization?
3. With the announcement of SMSA's withdrawal from the negotiation to take on the responsibilities of SSSA, what is your personal plan for further involvement with negotiations? Do you plan to remain in your position or resign along with the departure of the SMSA representatives?
Further, we demand that SSSA, which is an undisputed employer of the musicians, return to the business of contract negotiations post haste and contact us immediately to set up dates to begin negotiating a successor agreement to the current CBA.
Sincerely,
Craig Sorgi,
Chair, Musicians of the San Antonio Symphony
