2017 Theatre Season of Austin Theatre Project (first glance)
A moving pop/rock opera, a hilarious look at writing a musical, a tribute to a legendary Broadway team, and a musical so new, we can't even announce it yet! Austin Theatre Project is proud to announce its 2017 slate of musical productions.
Kicking off the season is Bare, a gripping, provocative pop opera about students during their senior year in a private Catholic preparatory academy and their struggles with first love, sexuality, drugs, parents, and religion. A cross between Rent and Dead Poet's Society, Bare tells of the relationship among a group of friends, including the secret lives of altar boy Peter and his roommate, the popular Jason.
BroadwayWorld.com in Los Angeles says, "Bare captures the sincerity and innocence of youth while cautioning us as a society to stop holding them hostage with an antiquated set of rules."
The second show of the 2017 season is the Tony-Nominated [Title of Show]. This hilarious musical is a musical about two nobodies named Hunter and Jeff who decide to write a completely original musical starring themselves and their attractive and talented ladyfriends, Susan and Heidi. Their musical, [title of show], gets into the New York Musical Theatre Festival, and becomes a hit. Then it gets an off-Broadway production at the Vineyard Theatre, and wins three Obie Awards! Then it's announced that their musical is going to Broadway!
The New York Times called [title of show]"DELECTABLE ENTERTAINMENT! A postmodern homage to the grand tradition of backstage musicals like Babes in Arms, Kiss Me, Kate and A Chorus Line."
John Kander and Fred Ebb are probably the most prolific composing team of modern American musical theater, and our third show of the season is a wonderful tribute to the men, their shows, and their music. The World Goes 'Round is wall to wall music from Broadway hits Cabaret, Chicago, The Rink, and many, many others. You'll also hear songs from film hits such as New York, New York and Funny Lady. This critically acclaimed show won several Off-Broadway awards and the hearts of the critics.
"Part musical revue, part Jukebox musical and part theatrical magic, The World Goes 'Round offers the perfect way to reacquaint yourself with familiar favorites and discover lesser known gems." - Stage and Cinema, Los Angeles
The final show of our 2017 season is one we really can't talk about... yet! What we CAN say is that we are currently working to gain the performance rights to a hit musical that just recently closed on Broadway. We promise to let you know as soon as we are able and we promise you will be just as excited as we are!
As soon as we are able to acquire the dates for performances, we will let you know and begin season ticket sales. And by the way, be on the lookout for a HUGE surprise when that happens!
