Conspire Theatre
Conspire Theatre creates theatre with women during and post-incarceration.
“I am a learner, mentor, advocate, mother, wife, and friend. I am the set free.”
– Lauren, Performing Possibilities performer
Our Programs:
Rehearsing Possibilities: The Travis County Jail Project: We offer on-going theatre and creative writing classes with women incarcerated in both the minimum and maximum security units at the Travis County Correctional Complex in Del Valle, TX. The program began in 2009 and continues with a partnership with the TCCC Social Services Program Coordinator and the support of Travis County Sheriff Greg Hamilton. Conspire works within TCCC’s PRIDE and PEACE programs for women (which offer job readiness, anger management, and parenting classes) and uses theatre and writing as a tool for community building, teaching communication and conflict resolution skills, to improve literacy and build self-confidence. We serve over 100 women at the jail annually.
Performing Possibilities – A Theatre Ensemble for Women Post-Incarceration: In July 2013 Conspire Theatre launched an ensemble theatre program for women who have experienced incarceration. Women create and perform theatre pieces about their lives before, during, post-incarceration, and beyond.
Women coming out of jail and prison face stigma that make finding stable housing and employment difficult, but many make huge efforts and come back into their communities to make positive change. In our 45-minute performance piece, women tell their own stories of struggle and triumph, sorrows and joy set against the larger backdrop of incarceration in Texas. The goal of the program is to reduce both internal and external stigma for women who have been released.
