Faith, culture, and race intersect in 1929, Harrison Texas. Divorcee Myra Tolliver makes a meager and uncertain living playing piano for the silent pictures while raising her teenaged son, Pete. As borders at the home of the Jacksons, Myra supplements rent by giving piano lessons to the Jackson’s two teenaged daughters, Katie Bell and Vesta. Mr. Jackson is an engineer for the railroad and lives with the uncertainty of being “bumped” from one location to another. Pete’s alcoholic father, Gerard, lives in Houston with his new wife and two small children, and tries to lure Pete away from Myra with unrealistic promises of a better life. Willis, an earnest bricklayer abandoned by his wife, Gladys, courts Myra and proposes marriage. A young Mexican preacher’s son visits the Jacksons and enlightens them with Spanish scripture and song.

Gaslight Baker Theatre announces auditions for Horton Foote’s Talking Pictures, directed by Nina Bryant. Open auditions will be held at the Gaslight Baker Theatre (216 South Main Street, Lockhart, TX 78644) on Thursday, June 4th at 6:30 and Sunday, June 7th at 2:00.
Please prepare a one-minute comedic monologue (all roles) and a short song (a capella) if you are auditioning for the roles of Myra or Estaquio. Please also have a list of conflicts between June 16th and September 6th. Headshot and resume preferred.
