Sophisticated Ladies, the Duke Ellington musical

Welcome to Harlem’s famed Cotton Club in this stylish, brassy musical celebration of Duke Ellington’s greatest musical hits. A full on-stage orchestra backs superb jazz vocalists, extraordinary tap dancers, dazzling deco costumes, and unforgettable torch singers who bring classics like “Mood Indigo,” “Take the A Train,” “It Don’t Mean a Thing (If It Ain’t Got That Swing)” to vivid life in this grand Tony Award-winning Broadway musical never before produced in Austin! This production will be Directed by Abe Reybold and Choreographed by Dominique Kelley.

SHOW DATES: Rehearsals begin June 15 with performances beginning July 15. The production will run through August 23, with a possible extension through August 30. Shows run Tuesdays through Sundays at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday and Sundays at 2:30 p.m.

 

 


Zach Theatre announces auditions for Sophisticated Ladies on Monday, March 2 (dance call) and Tuesday, March 3 (singer call) from 6-10 p.m. in ZACH’s Nowlin Rehearsal Studio at 1426 Toomey Road. Callbacks will be scheduled on Wednesday, March 4 from 6-10 p.m. also in the Nowlin Rehearsal Studio.

 

ROLES TO BE CAST (Please read all details carefully, and submit onlly for a role for which you are qualified):

  • Dancers: With strong technique in tap, jazz, ballet and partnering. Singing is encouraged but not required.
  • Singers: Looking for strong soloists who are comfortable singing Jazz and Ellington’s music.
  • Singers who dance/move: Seeking soloists who are strong dancers or movers.

We are seeking both AEA and non-AEA actors.

AUDITION SPECIFICS:

  • Monday, March 2 is the Dance Call. We’re seeing dancers only on this day. The room is available for warm-ups at 6 p.m. and auditions begin at 6:30 p.m. Please bring tap shoes, character shoes, and jazz shoes/sneakers. All Dancers will need to prepare 16 bars of music (“Happy Birthday” is fine if necessary).
  • Tuesday, March 3 is the Singer Call. We’re  seeing singers only on this day. Singers should prepare a jazz/swing standard that shows range. Please bring your book/options.
  • Wednesday, March 4 will be Callbacks. If you are auditioning on the previous two days, please be available this night. You will be notified via email with a specific time.

Actors will be seen BY APPOINTMENT ONLY.  To schedule an appointment, please send an email with the subject line that reads:

“(YOUR FIRST NAME, YOUR LAST NAME) SOPH LADIES AUSTIN AUDITIONS”

Please include in the email a resume and headshot attached in PDF or Word Document format to auditions [AT] zachtheatre.org . Please indicate in the email the day for which you will be auditioning (dancer Call or singer Call). All actors should bring a hard copy headshot and resume to the audition.
