Debate Team
by Silver Key Theatre
Feb. 15 - Feb. 17 (2016)
“Debate Team” is a darkly
comedic, new musical in one act by Brooklyn composer Toby Singer. Like a cross between “The Book of Mormon” and Moliere’s “Candide,” peering through the lens of modern day Silicon Valley, Debate Team examines when cell phone technology, ego, and a blindly utopic vision of the future converge, with apocalyptic results.

Debate Team tells the story of Isaac, an idealistic young engineer who works at All & Ever, the biggest tech company the world has ever seen, and his adventures after his test of a new high-tech phone goes horribly awry. When he, along with his stoner journalist roommate Harriet, meet a merry band of anti-technology activists called the Debate Team, their ‘best of all possible worlds’ begins to crack and shake on its foundations, with potentially dire consequences.
Musically, Debate Team defies genre, pulling from the whole history of musical theatre, with satirical golden age Broadway tunes mashed up against Sondheim-ish motifs, alongside soul, rock, and folk.
