Anton Chekhov Is A Tasty Snack
by Penfold Theatre Company
Feb. 01 - Feb. 02
In this fast-and-loose adaptation of Anton Chekhov’s The Seagull, a small-yet-ambitious Texas theatre company is determined to stage the most impressive production of this classic play the town has ever seen. However, as rehearsals drag on for months, the boundary between art and life blurs, and the cast finds themselves descending into chaos, mirroring the play’s own themes of passion and folly.
Anton Chekhov Is a Tasty Snack was written by Austin playwright Jenny Connell Davis. Penfold presented a staged reading in 2024, and this 2025 full production is the world premiere. The show is directed by Liz Fisher.

About the Roles
All roles are available.
Director (he/his, Any Race/Ethnicity, 30s-50s.) – The Director. Alex. Also the Artistic Director of a local theatre company that is known “for bold swings, for big risks, and for bringing an audacious vision of what it means to make true ensemble theatre for the here and now.” Also its best-known actor. Has maybe done some TV and locally shot films. Role requires the ability to pretend to speak Russian.
SM (she/hers/they/them, Any Race/Ethnicity, 20s-30s.) – The Stage Manager for this whole shitshow. Nat/Natalie. A really great stage manager who’s been working with Alex and the company for years, but no one knows that they used to be an actor.
Diva (she/hers, Any Race/Ethnicity, late 40s+) – The leading lady. Deena. A recognizable TV/film actress who played the “love interest” 20 years ago, but whose “first love” is the theater, and has acted in touring and regional productions all over the country. Probably understudied a role on Broadway, once, when she was a couple of years out of college. Is “taking a break” right now. Famous within the local acting community.
Turg (he/his, Any Race/Ethnicity, 20s-30s.) – The well-meaning dramaturg. John. A theater-loving nerd but not actually a “theater guy” from the local Comparative Literature department. An assistant professor who probably won’t make tenure, even though he deserves it, because he doesn’t know how to play the game. Role requires physical intimacy.
Ingenue (she/hers, Any Race/Ethnicity, 20s.) – The newest member of the acting company. Elena. Just graduated from a middling BFA program in musical theater. Very sweet, but also not what she seems. Role requires physical intimacy and a moment of dance or singing.*
We encourage actors of all races, ethnicities, gender identities, sexual orientations, ages, and abilities to audition.
What to Prepare
Please prepare two contrasting contemporary monologues. Each monologue should be approximately one minute.
*If you want to be considered only for the role of Ingenue, you also need to prepare a quick moment that showcases your vocal or dance skills.
We also request that you bring a headshot and resume to your audition.
