Peter and the Starcatcher
by Fredericksburg Theater Company (FTC)
Oct. 27 - Oct. 28
This Tony Award-winning musical is based on the best-selling novels and upends the century-old story of how an orphan boy becomes the legendary Peter Pan. From marauding pirates and jungle tyrants to unwilling comrades and unlikely heroes. With characters such as Black Stache and Smee, this highly theatrical production playfully explores the depths of greed and despair, and the bonds of friendship, duty and love.
The original Broadway production was a deliberately low-budget spectacle: an extravaganza of staging that relied on suggestion and storytelling. The script, jam-packed with poetry, fart jokes, gentle lyricism, and numerous nods to pop culture, is a coming-of-age adventure story about how a nameless orphan -- inspired by a remarkable and ambitious girl -- became the strange and celebrated hero who is the Boy Who Would Not Grow Up.
NEEDED: 12+ Performers. Agile- Lots of physical comedy involved.
A true ensemble piece. FTC is looking for actors who love to tell stories. Every member of the cast will have a key role in this production. For two-and-a-half hours, a handful of actors make theatrical magic by playing dozens of characters: sailors, pirates, British naval officers, Mollusk natives, and orphans in addition to eighteen major roles.
Anyone looking to audition must prepare a song to perform for the directing. We aren’t looking for the best voices, we want people who can perform a story. There will be cold readings at the auditions.
Peter and the Starcatcher will be directed by FTC Artistic Director Courtney LeFan. Musical direction by returning guest director, Rhonda Behrends.
Peter opens February 14th, 2025 and runs for three weekends. Tickets will go on sale January 27th, 2025.

CHARACTERS (any gender can play any role)
BOY/PETER- (15y/o and up) A boy who doesn’t miss much. Nameless, homeless, and friendless at the beginning. A hero by the end. A Survivor. More than anything, he wants a home and a family.
PRENTISS- (15y/o and up) Ambitious, hyper-articulate, logical; yearns to be a leader, but doesn’t have the courage to lead. A bit of a blowhard with just a touch of cowardice.
TED- (15y/o and up) Obsessed with food. Loveable. A natural actor, an easy wit, perhaps a future poet.
MOLLY- (15y/o and up) A true leader at a time when girls are mostly followers. Will risk everything for the sake of doing right. Curious and intelligent. 13 years old but will grow up to be a great and strong woman.
LORD LEONARD ASTER- (25y/o and up) English gentleman, loyal subject to the Queen, devoted father, and faithful friend. Lord Aster is a Starcatcher and father to Molly, an apprentice Starcatcher.
MRS BUMBRAKE- (20y/o and up) Molly’s nanny, British to the bone. Still has enough of her girlish charm to turn a sailor’s head and leaven his dreams.
CAPTAIN SCOTT- (20y/o and up) Captain of The Wasp. Friend of Lord Aster.
GREMPKIN- (20y/o and up) The mean schoolmaster of St. Norbert’s Orphanage for Lost Boys.
STACHE- (25y/o and up) Long after everyone else got out of the pirate business, Black Stache continues to terrorize the seven seas in search of a hero worthy of his villainy. He is famous for his face foliage. Heartless, suspiciously well-read, partial to the poetical and theatrical, and given to a ferocity from which no good shall ever spring.
SMEE- (20y/o and up) First mate to Black Stache. Single-mindedly dedicated to his captain’s every whim.
SLANK- (20y/o and up)- The Neverland’s vicious captain. A greedy pirate who’d sell his own mother for a ship to command and is after Starstuff for personal gain.
ALF- (20y/o and up) An old sea dog. Something about him appeals to the feminine sensibility-might be his bow legs, his saucy gait, or his kind heart.
MACK- (20y/o and up) A very bad sailor who wants to be anywhere but under the thumb of Slank.
SANCHEZ- (20y/o and up) A hard-working pirate with an identity crisis.
FIGHTING PRAWN- (20y/o and up) King of the Mollusks. Kidnapped by British sailors and brought into chains to England, he served as sous-chef in a country estate in Derbyshire, where, for no good reason, he learned Italian wines and mastered Italian cuisine. Since returning to his island kingdom, he vengefully murders any English who dare to land in his kingdom.
HAWKING CLAM- (20y/o and up) Son of Fighting Prawn.
TEACHER- (20y/o and up) Formerly a salmon, but after an encounter with Starstuff, she has become an ancient, knowledgeable mermaid.
ENSEMBLE- (15 y/o and up) Playing various characters throughout the show. Pirates, sailors, orphans, mermaids, mollusks, and narrators.
