Disaster! the musical
by Georgetown Palace Theatre
Dec. 10 - Dec. 12 (2023)
It’s 1979, and New York’s hottest A-listers are lining up for the opening of a floating casino and discotheque. Also attending is a faded disco star, a sexy nightclub singer with her eleven-year-old twins, a disaster expert, a feminist reporter, an older couple with a secret, a pair of young guys who are looking for ladies, an untrustworthy businessman and a nun with a gambling addiction. What begins as a night of boogie fever quickly changes to panic as the ship succumbs to multiple disasters, such as earthquakes, tidal waves and infernos. As the night turns into day, everyone struggles to survive and, quite possibly, repair the love that they’ve lost… or at least escape the killer rats.
“Put The Poseidon Adventure, Earthquake, and Airplane! in a blender; add 30 pop hits from the 1970’s (such as “Hot Stuff” and “I am Woman”), carefully chopped…add garish coloring, muddle with camp, and garnish with the kitschiest cocktail umbrella you can find. This is the recipe for Disaster!, a lovably scrappy and often deliciously silly jukebox-musical spoof.”

The Auditions:
Initial vocal auditions will begin at 6 PM on Sunday, December 10, on the Springer Stage. This initial audition should consist of no more than one-minute of a song of your choice, ideally in the style of the show, that highlights your range and abilities. Disaster’s score is a collection of 1970s classic pop and disco songs, most of which are presented in a “tongue-in-cheek” style. Please factor that into your song choice as you prepare your audition. Singing something from the show is completely acceptable if you so choose. An accompanist will be provided, and we will also be able to connect pre-recorded music if you bring that with you. Please, NO a cappella audition songs. If using pre-recorded music, please make sure to have the exact cut you will be using cued up prior to entering the audition room and it shouldn’t include vocals. If using sheet music, please make sure it is in the correct key, with any cuts clearly marked for the accompanist.
The dance audition on Monday, December 11 will be from 7:00 PM- 10:00 PM on the Springer Stage. Please come in comfortable clothes (preferably not jeans) and appropriate shoes – Jazz or Character Shoes are preferred but tennis shoes are acceptable as well. The dance audition will consist of a choreographed combo. All roles will participate in some capacity during musical numbers, so all auditioners are required to attend.
- If your audition time is between 6pm and 8:30 pm, please arrive for the dance call on Monday at 7 pm.
- If your audition time is after 8:30 spm, please arrive for the dance call on Monday at 8:30 pm.
Callbacks:
Callbacks will take place on Tuesday, December 12 by invitation only from 6:30 PM to 10:00 PM on the Springer Stage. Callbacks will be posted on the Georgetown Palace website as soon as possible after initial auditions are completed, and an email will be sent to all audition participants at the time of posting. Specific reading sides and cuts of songs will be provided for callbacks for all characters. A link to this material will be provided in the email.
Audition sign ups can be found HERE
If none of the audition times listed works for your schedule, please fill out the form and add yourself to the waitlist. Send productions@georgetownpalace.com an email, and we’ll arrange an alternate audition time.
When signing up for an audition slot please note any conflicts during the rehearsal or performance dates. Please note: conflicts do not necessarily negate the opportunity to be cast, but we must know about them up front to factor that into the casting decisions. Barring emergencies, additional conflicts added/disclosed after casting could result in dismissal from the production. Sunday rehearsals will only be planned for tech rehearsals immediately prior to opening, but please include Sunday afternoon conflicts for the rehearsal period so that in the event a Saturday must be canceled due to cast conflicts we will know whether a reschedule on Sunday is an option. Adding all of your conflicts after casting could result in removal of the production.
Rehearsals:
Rehearsals begin Monday, January 29, 2024. Scripts and scores will be available at the first rehearsal. But those offered roles will receive a link to a digital copy. Rehearsals will typically be held Monday-Thursday evenings from 7:00 PM to 10:00 PM, and on Saturdays from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM. Sunday afternoon will be an option only in the event a Saturday must be canceled due to cast conflicts.

- This show’s ASL performance is scheduled for March 30, 2024.
CASTING:
Once casting is completed (typically 2-3 days after callbacks), emails will be sent to the actors that will be offered a role in the production. Once the full cast has accepted, everyone else who auditioned will be notified via email.
COMPENSATION:
All actors offered a role in the show will be paid a stipend. Payment and casting will be contingent upon The Georgetown Palace Theatre’s casting policies.
