Somewhere: A Primer for the End of Days
by Gaslight Baker Theatre

Jun. 08 - Jun. 10 (2023)

Something went wrong with the world, and now nearly all the insects are dead and crops everywhere are failing. Entomologist Cassandra and her engineer brother Alexander follow the migration of the last monarch butterflies in the world. Their path intersects with a truffle farm where four leery survivors hunkered down for the oncoming collapse of society are fighting to preserve their livelihood.

Auditions for Somewhere: A Primer for the End of Days by Marisela Treviño Orta

Casting
The cast consists of 6 main characters (descriptions for whom are below).Additionally, we will cast 4 to 6 actors as members of the Chorus (see more below). We encourage people of color and people of all genders and abilities to audition for this production.

Characters

Cassandra. 20s, POC. An entomologist. Pragmatic and realistic to a fault. Unafraid because she finds chaos interesting, scientifically speaking. Sister to Alexander. (Role requires a small amount of a cappella singing.)

Alexander. 20s, POC. An engineer once upon a time. Cynical, directionless, and heartbroken. Looking for something to believe in. Devoted to sister Cassandra. (Role requires a small amount of a cappella singing.)

Diana. 20s. Former librarian. Discontented and restless. The apocalypse really messed up her plans for a cross-country road trip.

Sybil. Early 30s. Diana’s older sister. A mathematician, accountant, and business partner with husband Eph, she applies her skills to the preservation of their lives. Never met a problem she couldn’t solve, until now.

Eph. 30s, POC. Former general contractor—ran his company with wife Sybil. Practical leader whose focus is on security and survival, sometimes to the exclusion of everything else.

Corin. 20s. Eph’s former employee and right-hand man. In love with Diana. Quiet, watchful, and committed to maintaining the land his family inhabited.

Chorus. The Chorus will be composed of 4 to 6 actors who, through movement and costuming, will enact certain elements in the show. Chorus members should expect fewer rehearsals than the speaking cast, but their work will be decisive to the action and aesthetic feel of the show.
