A Streetcar Named Desire
by Wimberley Players

Jun. 03 (2023)

Blanche DuBois comes to visit her sister Stella in New Orleans after losing her job as a teacher and the family plantation in Laurel, Mississippi. Blanche, who is suffering from years of emotional trauma, finds life with her sister and her sister’s husband Stanley Kowalski unacceptable and challenging. The only light on the horizon is a possible romance with one of Stanley’s bowling and poker buddies, Mitch. When Blanche’s usual armor of feminine appeal fails and the difficulties with Stanley escalate to brutality, she breaks down. Stella makes the difficult decision to go along with Stanley’s wishes to have her sister committed to an institution.

The Pulitzer-Prize-winning A Streetcar Named Desire, Tennessee Williams's third full-length play, opened on Broadway on December 3, 1947. Seventy-six years on, the play is still being performed around the world from university theatre to community theatre, to professional theatre with major revival productions in recent years including eight on Broadway (most recent 2012) and London’s West End (most recent 2023). It is a masterpiece in character study that resonates with issues still plaguing society today.
