“We Sail On In Darkness” tells the stories of four female Catholic mystics and four Desert Mothers. Weaving visions and reality, this is a piece of physical theater that blends music, movement, puppetry, and narrative to take the audience on a journey highlighting the strong, courageous voices of women whose inspiring stories have been obscured by the past.

PERFORMANCE LOCATION: Gish Hall, St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, San Antonio
AUDITION DATES: Nov. 9th & 11th, 2022 (7:00pm-9:00pm) and Nov. 12th (1:00pm-5:00pm) in person by appointment. If necessary, callbacks will be held Nov. 16th (7:00pm-9:00pm).
AUDITION LOCATION: Auditions will be held at either Old School Makerspace (2659 Eisenhauer Road, San Antonio TX 78209) or Marian Mission Hall at OST (285 Oblate Drive, San Antonio TX 78216). Auditionees will be informed of the location assigned to their time slot two weeks prior to the audition.

STIPEND: All actors will receive a $500 stipend
ACCESSIBILITY NOTE: We desire to be an accessible production for working parents and those with childcare constraints. Please inform the team during auditions if you anticipate that you will need any support in this area.
ABOUT THE AUDITIONS: Seeking 1 male and 8 female actors who are highly collaborative and have experience in physical theater or are willing to be trained in it. Auditionees will be assigned a time slot based on their availability two weeks prior to auditions. In small groups auditionees will be led through movement warmups and exercises by the choreographer, regardless of whether the role they are auditioning for is a movement-heavy part. Actors who are auditioning for characters that sing will be led through a group choral exercise by the music director. All actors are asked to perform a 1-2 minute prepared dramatic monologue, and will be given sides to read. Please plan to be at the audition for 1 hour.
ROLES:
PERPETUA (Female, 18-25) Character’s age is 22. She is a young mother, a noblewoman during the time of the Roman Empire who is martyred in a Roman arena. Movement/dance experience is desired for this role. Must be able to climb a ladder/set pieces, and must be willing to sing during the performance.
HILDEGARD OF BINGEN (Female, 55-75+) Character’s age is 80. She is an abbess and founder of a medieval convent. She is an artist, a politician, an intellectual, a healer, a force to be reckoned with. Must be able to climb a ladder/set pieces.
JULIAN OF NORWICH (Female, 25-40) Character’s age is 31. She is a medieval recluse, a theologian, a guide to many. Some movement/dance experience is preferred. Must be able to climb a ladder/set pieces.
ANGELA OF FOLIGNO (Female, 30-50) Character’s age is 43. A medieval noblewoman who has disavowed her wealth. Deeply passionate to the point of fanaticism, sometimes seen as mentally unstable. Must be able to climb a ladder/set pieces.
AMMA SYNCLETICA / JULIAN'S MOTHER (Female, 40-60+) The Desert Mothers are guides, singers, movers, and puppeteers. Movement/dance experience is desired for this role. Must be capable of singing and climbing a ladder/set pieces.
AMMA SARAH / TOWNSWOMAN (Female, 25-45) The Desert Mothers are guides, singers, movers, and puppeteers. Movement/dance experience is desired for this role. Must be capable of singing and climbing a ladder/set pieces.
AMMA MATRONA / SISTER ELIZABETH (Female, 18-30) The Desert Mothers are guides, singers, movers, and puppeteers. Movement/dance experience is desired for this role. Must be capable of singing and climbing a ladder/set pieces.
AMMA THEODORA / ALICE (Female, 25-50) The Desert Mothers are guides, singers, movers, and puppeteers. Movement/dance experience is desired for this role. Must be capable of singing and climbing a ladder/set pieces.
MAN, PLAYS MULTIPLE ROLES (Male, 35-60) The male role plays a variety of parts, including Perpetua’s father, a priest, one of Perpetua’s companions in prison, etc. An ability to play a range of parts with distinction is desired. Movement/dance experience is preferred. Must be capable of climbing a ladder/set pieces.
