by The Problematics
Mar. 14 - Mar. 15 (2020)
We are creating a contemporary and absurdist adaptation of Euripides’ The Bacchae - an ancient Greek tragedy based on the initiation of the rites of Dionysus into a prideful culture that has lost its connection to the simple pleasures of life and its humble humanity. Our production team has spent the last few months re-writing the ancient text to address some of our own concerns about our current culture and we are ready to put it on its feet. Together, we are creating an intimate outdoor theatrical experience and want people of all theatre and non-theatre backgrounds to audition for the roles. We are mostly concerned about folks being able to commit to our FULL rehearsal schedule as the process will be essential to developing the final performance.
Who We Are: a collaborative group of physical theatre and performance artists who are interested in disturbing the “entertainment” space of Austin through thoughtfully composed plays, performances, and theatrical experiences.
March 14th, 2020 – Auditions for female chorus - 30-minute group slots and 10 minutes solo speaking and movement slots will be assigned between 3 pm - 5 pm or 5 pm - 7 pm.
March 15th – Auditions for male Guards, Theo, and Cadmus - 30-minute group slots and 10 minutes solo speaking and movement slots will be assigned between 3 pm - 5 pm or 5 pm - 7 pm.
Theo [Male; mid 20s-mid 30s] – a young and cynical CEO who has inherited his grandfather’s tech company.
Cadmus [Male; mid 50s-mid60s] – A warm, old, and retired CEO of a tech company.
Guards [Male; 20s-30s] – four to five men who are Theo’s “slave-ployees” and the male counterpart to the female Chorus. Many will have speaking parts as messengers/guards. Most importantly, this role requires intensive movement.
Chorus of Bacchae [Female; 18-90] – A diverse group of 10ish woman who are Dionysus’ followers. They speak, sing, and move in unison and at times alone as a traditional ancient Greek chorus. This role requires intensive movement.
Nothing to Prepare ahead. You will be reading sides, creating various ensemble moments and improv, and will be asked to do some movement work solo. Please wear comfortable clothing!
