The Tempest (6-8 Performers)
by Penfold Theatre Company

Nov. 16 - Nov. 17 (2019)

On a distant island a man waits. Robbed of his position, power and wealth, his enemies have left him in isolation. But this is no ordinary man, and this no ordinary island. Prospero is a magician, able to control the very elements and bend nature to his will. When a sail appears on the horizon, he reaches out across the ocean to the ship that carries the men who wronged him. Creating a vast magical storm, he wrecks the ship and washes his enemies up on the shore. When they wake, they find themselves lost on a fantastical island where nothing is as it seems. The Tempest, Shakespeare’s most magical play, is an enchanting exploration of the lure control and the greater power of forgiveness.

The Tempest is directed by Rudy Ramirez.

This production will use outside texts including historical documents and critical writings to examine the context and history of The Tempest as one of the first texts to engage with European colonization. The goal will be to create a production that illustrates the place of The Tempest twithin a complex history of race and empire.

A complete synopsis of the play can be found here.Roles

An ensemble of 6 to 8 performers will be used to represent all characters in the story. The division of roles will be decided, in part, based on the members of the ensemble. As The Tempest explores the history of colonization, we consider a racially diverse cast necessary for the production. Actors of all gender, sexual, racial or ethnic identities are encouraged to audition.

All roles are paid. Equity and non-Equity actors are welcome.
