The Gift of the Magi

Set in the days before Christmas 1923, in Austin, Texas, Gift of the Magi centers on Jim and Della Young, two poor newlyweds trying to make it through the hard times. An ensemble production, the show also features various characters and situations from O. Henry’s stories. There is also a children’s Christmas pageant and a chorus of carolers, made up of singers of all ages, that appears throughout the play.

Saturday, October 5, 11 am - 2 pm

Wednesday, October 9, 7 - 9 pm

2019 Show dates: Dec. 5, 6, 7, 13, 14, 20, 21 at 8 pm; Dec. 15 and 21, at 2 pm

Characters: 

Jim--a young man (playing 20s-30s); married to Della

Della--a young woman (20s-30s)

Mrs. Schultz--a woman in her 30s to 50s

Eleanor--Mrs. Schultz’s preteen daughter

Mrs. Zizzbaum--owner of a store and boarding house (40s to 60s)

Mr. Porter--shop clerk at Zizzbaum’s store (20s to 40s)

Hetty Pepper--a young woman (quite poor, perhaps with an Irish accent)

Melvin--An older man (40s to 60s) who lives on the street; he walks with a crutch.

Zelda--Melvin’s wife; owner of the Bluebonnet Inn (40s to 60s)

Schoolchildren--12 to 18 children, aged 8 to 16, to perform in the Christmas pageant and be in the chorus; most will have speaking lines.

 

All genders and ethnicities are encouraged to audition. 

Auditions will consist of readings from the script.
