Proof
by Wimberley Players
Feb. 09 - Feb. 11 (2019)
Catherine, a promising but emotionally unstable young woman, has spent years caring for her father Robert, a mathematical genius who, after suffering a severe mental illness, has recently passed away. In the wake of Robert’s death, Catherine must deal with the arrival of her estranged sister, Claire, who was largely absent during their father’s illness. Claire worries that Catherine may have inherited more than Robert’s idiosyncrasies, and, against Catherine’s wishes, is now subtly determined to care for her sister. To complicate matters, Hal, a former student of Catherine’s father has recently spent weeks pouring through more than a hundred of Robert’s old notebooks, analyzing them for any undiscovered genius they may contain. In the days that follow Robert’s funeral, a developing romance between Catherine and Hal is put on hold by the discovery of a brilliant mathematical proof, thought to be the final efforts of Robert during a moment of clarity. Catherine claims that she wrote the proof, leading Claire and Hal to wonder if she has inherited Robert’s mathematical genius or his mental illness.
