The Addams Family
by Fredericksburg Theater Company (FTC)

Nov. 20 - Nov. 21 (2017)

The Addams Family features an original story, and it’s every father’s nightmare. Wednesday Addams, the ultimate princess of darkness, has grown up and fallen in love with a sweet, smart young man from a respectable family. A man her parents have never met. And if that weren’t upsetting enough, she confides in her father and begs him not to tell her mother. Now, Gomez Addams must do something he’s never done before — keep a secret from his beloved wife, Morticia. Everything will change for the whole family on the fateful night they host a dinner for Wednesday’s “normal” boyfriend and his parents.

Auditions for FTC’s Winter Musical The Addams Family will be held Monday and Tuesday, November 20th & 21st at 7pm at The Steve W. Shepherd Theater, located at 1668 U.S. Highway 87 South in Fredericksburg. A music program from the show will be used for auditions.  A CD player, hookups for a MP3 player and pianist will be provided. No a capella auditions, please.  There are 4 principal female roles and 6 principal male roles plus a chorus of 5 females and 5 males. All roles are available for auditions. Attendance to both audition days is not mandatory, but you’re welcome to attend both days.

Audition preparation:

Audition materials are available starting Monday, October 23rd at the FTC Box Office, located next to the theater.  There are copies of the audition form and other information on the auditions and the production.  Perusal copies of the script/vocal book are available to be checked out.

Auditions will start with everyone singing a section of “When You’re An Addams”.  You’ll then learn dance/movement for that section, so dress in appropriate clothes and footwear.  Next, each of you will sing the musical selection you’ve prepared.  After that, we’ll read scenes from the show.

Rehearsals:

Some music rehearsals will be held between November 29th and December 21st . There will be no rehearsals December 22nd – January 1st. Rehearsals will resume January 2nd. Performances for The Addams Family are Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, February 16th - March 4th. Attendance to tech/dress rehearsals February 5th-9th and February 12th-15th and all performances is mandatory.

CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONS

FEMALE PRINCIPALS:

MORTICIA ADDAMS

Vocal range: Alto (G sharp to B flat)

 Age range: 40-55

Attractive, leggy, a strong dancer/mover, the strength of the family with a sexy, dry wit. Feels her husband is hiding something from her and will use any tactic to lure the secret out. Given to low-keyed rhapsodies about her garden of deadly nightshade, henbane and dwarf’s hair.

WEDNESDAY ADDAMS

Vocal range: Soprano (A sharp to E sharp)

Age range: 18-24

Has the same dry wit and sensibility of her mother. She finds love with a “normal” boy, Lucas, and wants to introduce his family to hers. Experiences the youthful drama that comes with first love while holding onto her dark side, her family heritage.

GRANDMAMA

Vocal range: Belter (G sharp to F sharp)

Age range: 60-80 (or older, who knows?)

A feisty old woman, fun and quirky, but don’t mess with her. This disrespectful old hag is Gomez’s mother…or Morticia’s...or maybe neither… She lives in the attic and concocts a variety of potions, including a powerful truth serum.

ALICE BEINEKE

Vocal range: Soprano (A flat to G sharp)

Age range: 40-55

“Normal” mother of Wednesday’s “normal” boyfriend. So devoted to her family that she puts aside her own needs. Good natured and quirky, she often speaks in rhyme. While at the Addams Family dinner party, she drinks a potion that causes her to let her hair down and speak the truth.

MALE PRINCIPALS:

GOMEZ ADDAMS

Vocal range: Tenor (B flat to G sharp)

Age range: 40-55

Morticia’s husband, of Spanish descent, he takes great pride in his family and revels in all it means to be “an Addams”. He struggles with having to keep his daughter’s secret from his wife, whom he adores more than death. A crafty schemer, but a jolly man in his own way.

UNCLE FESTER ADDAMS

Vocal range: Tenor (C sharp to C sharp)

Age range: 30-60

Gomez’s brother, he serves as the musical’s narrator. Larger than life, an energetic, joyous, child-like presence. He can be incorrigible and except for the good nature of the family and the ignorance of the courts, would probably be locked away.

PUGSLEY ADDAMS

Vocal range: Tenor (A sharp to F sharp)

Age range: 10-15

A charming, funny, husky boy who loves being tortured by his sister, Wednesday. He wants to ensure he won’t lose his sister to her new boyfriend, so he takes matters into his own hands. An energetic monster of a boy…and a dedicated, yet crafty troublemaker.

LURCH

Vocal range: Bass (E flat to E sharp)

 Age range: 30-60

A very tall, imposing figure, the Addams butler stays aware of everything that’s going on. Not an easy task. He speaks in moans and groans throughout the show, then comes forth with a stunning bass solo in the show’s finale.

LUCAS BEINEKE

Vocal range: Tenor (C sharp to C sharp)

Age range: 18-24

He’s fallen in love with weird Wednesday Addams and plans to marry her. Now he’s faced with reconciling the differences between their families. A fairly “normal” person, a hopeless romantic, he writes poetry, yet has a crazy and dark side.

MAL BEINEKE

Vocal range: Tenor (C sharp to A sharp)

Age range: 40-55

Lucas’s stuffy father and Alice’s exasperated husband. Always looking out for the welfare of his family. He was once a follower of the Grateful Dead, but has lost that side of himself while striving to be the “normal” provider of a “normal” family.

CHORUS (5 female and 5 male)

THE ADDAMS ANCESTORS A variety of deceased Addams Family members from the Stone Age to the 20th Century. They emerge from their crypts once a year to celebrate with the living, then return to their rest. Only this year Uncle Fester traps them above ground to help promote the young love between Wednesday and Lucas. A very energetic group of singers, movers and shakers. Not at all what you’d expect from a bunch of zombies.
