Don't Dress for Dinner
by Vexler Theatre

Jun. 18 - Jun. 19 (2017)

Bernard is planning a romantic weekend with his chic Parisian mistress in his charming converted French farmhouse, whilst his wife, Jacqueline, is away. He has arranged for a cordon bleu cook to prepare gourmet delights, and has invited his best friend, Robert, along too to provide the alibi. It's foolproof; what could possibly go wrong? Well.... suppose Robert turns up not realizing quite why he has been invited. Suppose Robert and Jacqueline are secret lovers, and consequently determined that Jacqueline will NOT leave for the weekend. Suppose the cook has to pretend to be the mistress and the mistress is unable to cook. Suppose everyone's alibi gets confused with everyone else's. An evening of hilarious confusion ensues as Bernard and Robert improvise at breakneck speed.

Directed by Dr. Richard Sodders

"Hurtling along at the speed of light, this breathtaking farce is a near faultless piece of  theatrical invention. Within seconds we are drawn into a delicious web of marital treachery which  accelerates with classic symmetry to an all-star denouement." - The Guardian

CHARACTERS

*Age and race for the characters is indeterminate, but all should be adults. Bernard, Jacqueline, and Robert should be around the same age.

BERNARD– smart, funny man who is perhaps a little fussy.  Not very good at being sly, but has a sharp mind and a quick wit.  He is affable and charming, if not sexy.

JACQUELINE – strong, eloquent woman, able to think on her feet and manipulate on the fly.  She is both cunning and a bit suspicious, but always charming and rarely loses her cool.

ROBERT  – kind, not very good at lying and perhaps gets a bit too flustered under pressure.  He is having an affair with Jaqueline, but is maybe not exactly cut out for the sneaking around and deception it requires.

SUZANNE – Bernard’s mistress.  Charming and beautiful, she is not used to the dodging and scheming that this night requires, but she joins in rather quickly.  She is used to the luxuries of a certain lifestyle and is comically incapable of basic household responsibilities.

GEORGE – Suzette’s husband.  Large, strong and intimidating.  He has a low tolerance for societal games and perhaps lacks the intelligence to keep up.  He loves Suzette but has a bit of a jealous streak and an easily flaring temper
